Frequently Asked Questions
1What is the 2 bucket (two-bucket) retirement strategy?
It's the simplest version of the retirement bucket strategy. It splits your retirement money into two parts. The Safety Bucket holds the next few years of expenses in low-risk investments, and you withdraw from it every month. The Growth Bucket holds everything else in higher-return investments. Every few years, money moves from the Growth Bucket to refill the Safety Bucket.
2Why use two buckets instead of one?
Because the money you need soon is kept safe, a market crash doesn't force you to sell growth investments at a loss to pay your bills. The Growth Bucket has years to recover before its next refill, while the Safety Bucket keeps paying your expenses.
3How many years of expenses should the Safety Bucket hold?
Commonly 3 to 5 years. Fewer years keep more money growing but give less time to wait out a bad market. More years give more peace of mind but lower overall returns. Try different values and watch how the final balance changes.
4What happens when the Safety Bucket earns more than it needs?
At each refill, the Safety Bucket is reset to exactly the next few years of expenses. If interest has left it holding more than that, the extra is moved back to the Growth Bucket, where it can earn more.
5What does the shortfall age mean?
It's the age at which both buckets together can no longer pay your full monthly expense. The calculator also shows the corpus you would need to avoid it, and the highest monthly expense your current corpus can support.
6Are the returns in this calculator guaranteed?
No. The calculator uses a fixed yearly return for each bucket to keep things simple. Real returns go up and down, especially in the Growth Bucket — which is exactly why the Safety Bucket exists. Treat the results as a planning guide, not a promise.
72 bucket vs 3 bucket strategy: what's the difference?
A 3 bucket strategy adds a middle bucket between the two, for example years 4 to 10 of expenses in moderate-risk investments such as hybrid or debt funds. It refills the Safety Bucket while the Growth Bucket stays invested for longer. The 2 bucket strategy is simpler, with fewer transfers to track, and works well when the Safety Bucket already covers a typical market downturn. A 3 Bucket Strategy calculator is coming soon on SIPCafe.
8How is the bucket strategy different from a regular SWP?
A regular SWP (systematic withdrawal plan) sells a little of one portfolio every month, whatever the market is doing, so in a crash you end up selling growth investments at low prices. The bucket strategy pays your monthly expenses from the Safety Bucket instead, and only takes money out of the Growth Bucket at planned refills. Try SIPCafe's SWP calculator with the same corpus to compare the two.
How the Numbers Are Calculated
The plan is simulated month by month from your current age to your Withdraw Till age. Your monthly expense grows by the inflation rate once every year, starting from today's amount, even while you are still waiting to start withdrawals.
On day one, the Safety Bucket gets today's monthly expense × 12 × N (N = Expenses Covered) — no inflation is added up front, because the bucket keeps earning the Safety Bucket return while it pays out, which roughly keeps pace with the yearly rise in withdrawals. Everything left over goes into the Growth Bucket.
Every month after withdrawals begin, that month's expense is taken from the Safety Bucket. Every N years the Safety Bucket is reset to the next N years of expenses: topped up from the Growth Bucket, or, if it holds more than needed, the extra is moved back to the Growth Bucket. Both buckets then grow at their own monthly rate.
Monthly expense in year y
E(y) = Monthly expense today × (1 + Inflation)^y
Safety Bucket target at each refill
Target = E(y) × 12 × N
Refill amount
Moved = min(Target − Safety balance, Growth balance)
Each month, for each bucket
Balance = (Balance − Withdrawal) × (1 + Annual return ÷ 12)
- If the Safety Bucket runs out in the middle of a cycle, the Growth Bucket pays the expense directly. A shortfall is recorded only when both buckets are empty.
- Corpus needed and Max monthly expense are found by re-running the full simulation many times (binary search) until the plan just barely lasts till your target age.
- Today's money divides each year's amounts by the total inflation up to that year. All figures are rounded only when displayed.
